Modern Dark Nobilia Kitchen with Island & Utility Room, Newquay, Cornwall

Completed by Kitchen Kit Truro, this contemporary Nobilia Riva kitchen was designed for a spectacular new-build family home overlooking the Gannel Estuary in Newquay, Cornwall.

The project formed part of a full bungalow-to-two-storey redevelopment undertaken by the homeowner, a respected architect who wanted the kitchen to deliver a real “wow moment” when entering the open-plan living space. The brief focused on creating a bold architectural kitchen with premium appliances, generous storage and a large social island designed for entertaining.

What were the goals for the new kitchen?

The client wanted the kitchen to act as the centrepiece of the open-plan living space while offering the practicality required for everyday family life. As an architect-led project, the design needed to feel clean, contemporary and visually striking while still being highly functional.

A large island was essential to the layout, providing space for at least five stools so the family and guests could gather while cooking. The homeowners also wanted the kitchen to feature the latest appliances and smart storage solutions while keeping the design visually uncluttered.

What design challenges did we solve, and how?

One of the main challenges was working within the architectural layout of the new home, which included a sloping ceiling that limited the placement of tall units and wall cabinetry. Careful planning was required to ensure the kitchen still delivered the storage capacity the client wanted while maintaining balanced proportions across the room.

The design also needed to accommodate a large social island with a venting hob while avoiding a ceiling-mounted extractor. By specifying a Siemens venting hob integrated into the island, we were able to keep the space visually open while still delivering powerful extraction.

This approach helped maintain clear sightlines through the open-plan space while allowing the island to function as both a cooking and social hub.

Which cabinets and worktops did we choose, and why?

The kitchen features Nobilia Riva doors in Concrete Slate Grey, a textured finish that brings depth and character to the design while remaining durable and easy to maintain. The recessed handle profile in Slate Grey reinforces the clean architectural lines of the cabinetry and complements the modern aesthetic of the home.

For the worktops, the client selected Dekton Laurent in a 20mm thickness with waterfall end panels on the island. Inspired by natural stone, this dramatic surface features deep charcoal tones with striking veining, creating a strong visual contrast against the grey cabinetry.

Dekton was chosen not only for its appearance but also for its exceptional durability, making it ideal for a busy family kitchen.

Which appliances and sinks complete the look?

The kitchen is equipped with a premium suite of Siemens StudioLine appliances, delivering cutting-edge functionality to match the architectural design of the space.

The appliance specification includes a Siemens single oven with microwave, a full steam oven, a venting induction hob integrated into the island, two Siemens dishwashers, and separate larder fridge and freezer units. This setup ensures the kitchen is fully equipped for both everyday cooking and entertaining.

The sink area features a Blanco Etagon undermount sink in volcanic grey paired with a Quooker Flex boiling water tap in gun metal. This combination provides both practical convenience and a sleek, contemporary finish.

What finishing touches make everyday life easier?

The kitchen incorporates a range of clever storage solutions designed to maximise functionality while keeping the space organised and clutter-free.

Features include a LeMans corner pull-out system, an integrated bin system and a hidden “secret corner” cupboard that makes use of otherwise difficult spaces. Under-worktop lighting adds subtle illumination to the workspace while enhancing the overall atmosphere of the room.

The large island provides generous preparation space while also functioning as a social hub where family and friends can gather comfortably.

How did it all come together in the end?

The finished kitchen delivers exactly the dramatic first impression the client envisioned while remaining highly practical for everyday living.

Bold materials, premium appliances and carefully planned storage combine to create a kitchen that feels both architectural and welcoming. The large island forms the centrepiece of the space, providing the perfect setting for cooking, entertaining and family life.
