Masterclass Hatfield Willow Kitchen Dartmoor Devon

This Masterclass Hatfield Willow kitchen in Dartmoor, Devon was designed to transform a dated cottage kitchen into a warm, characterful space that reflects its surroundings while improving everyday functionality.

Combining traditional shaker styling with modern storage solutions and high-performance appliances, the finished design delivers a kitchen that feels both timeless and highly practical for modern living.

What were the goals for the new kitchen?

The original kitchen was dated and lacked the storage and usability needed for modern living. The brief was to retain the charm of the cottage while introducing a layout that works more effectively for everyday use.

Working within the constraints of the existing footprint and low ceiling heights, the goal was to maximise space, improve flow, and create a kitchen that feels open without losing its traditional character.

What design challenges did we solve, and how?

Designing within a traditional Dartmoor cottage brought several challenges, particularly around low ceilings and irregular wall spaces. Rather than altering the structure, the design focused on making the most of every available area.

A bespoke larder bank and custom under-stairs cabinetry were introduced to maximise storage, while Masterclass bi-fold cabinetry created a generous 1200mm-wide storage solution for larger items. Open oak shelving replaced wall units to keep the space feeling light and uncluttered.

Which cabinets and worktops did we choose, and why?

The client selected Masterclass Hatfield Willow shaker cabinetry, paired with Portland Oak elements to bring warmth and texture into the space. This combination complements the natural character of the cottage while maintaining a timeless aesthetic.

Caesarstone Darcrest quartz worktops were chosen to provide a durable, high-performance surface with a strong visual impact. Around the sink area, the scale of the worktop enhances the depth of the original stone walls, creating a standout feature within the kitchen.

Pewter-finish handles were selected to reinforce the traditional look while adding subtle detailing to the cabinetry.

Which appliances and features complete the kitchen?

The kitchen is fitted with a full suite of NEFF appliances, selected after the client attended a Kitchen Kit cookery event. This ensures reliable performance alongside a cohesive, modern finish.

A Rangemaster sink paired with a Blanco Choice 5-in-1 tap adds both practicality and a premium feel to the sink area, while the client’s range cooker now sits as a central focal point within the design.

How does the finished kitchen work day-to-day?

The redesigned layout improves both flow and usability, allowing the kitchen to function efficiently for cooking, preparation and everyday living.

Storage has been significantly enhanced, ensuring everything has a dedicated place, while the open shelving and considered layout help the space feel larger and more inviting despite the cottage proportions.

The result is a kitchen that successfully balances traditional design with modern functionality, creating a space that feels authentic to the property while working effortlessly for modern life.
